After cleaning out a virus-infected computer, the system would immediately log off after logging into any profile. It did this in Safe Mode, too. The same thing happened with the Administrator login.
The cause of the problem was that systemroot/system32/userinit.exe (for most systems: windows/system32/userinit.exe) had been deleted. The fix was to temporarily install the hard drive as the second drive in a computer with the same version of Windows XP. Then, I copied userinit.exe to windows/system32/ in the afflicted PC.
