XP Local Area Connection stuck at Acquiring Network Address

After removing a virus, an XP SP3 system could not access the Internet. The Local Area Connection was stuck at Acquiring Network Address.

In DEVICE MANAGER under VIEW and then DISPLAY HIDDEN DEVICES, AFD showed a yellow exclamation point.

Going to START > RUN, I typed in regedit and then enter. In the registry, the entry for AFD showed the wrong file.

I changed the entry to read:
\SystemRoot\System32\drivers\afd.sys
and then restarted the computer. This solved the afd.sys no Internet problem.
